What Should I Ask An Employer At An Interview?


The crucial stage of any recruitment process is the interview, both for the employer and the prospective employee.  The questions that the employer asks enables them to ascertain if the candidate is suitable for the position and obtain any information not contained within the candidates CV.  It is also vitally important for the interviewee to ask questions regarding the company and specific role to make sure that they are happy to proceed with employment should it be offered.

Below are a number of questions that should provide a candidate with useful information about the employer and their processes, culture and policies;

  1. How would you describe a typical day in this position?
  2. What are the prospects for growth and advancement within the business?
  3. What do you like personally about working here?
  4. If I am extended a job offer, how soon would you like me to start?
  5. What would you like to see the person who fills this position do differently?
  6. Who does this position report to? If I am offered the position, can I meet him/her?
  7. What criteria will I be evaluated on for my performance review?
  8. Is this a new position or am I replacing someone?
  9. What are the department goals for next year?
  10. What is the company’s culture?
  11. Do you have plans for expansion?
  12. Could you tell me about your training program?
  13. Do you have an Onboarding process?
  14. Is it organizational policy to promote from within
  15. Could you describe a typical first assignment?
  16. How does the performance of this role play into the bigger goal or plan for the company?
  17. What do you think are your organization’s greatest competitive strengths with clients?
  18. How would you describe your corporation’s personality and management style?
  19. Do you encourage participation in community or professional activities?
  20. Do you have a company social club or similar?

Remember to check the company’s website and thoroughly read the vacancy description  prior to the interview.  If any of the questions that you have prepared are answered already then it is best not to ask the question outright.  It is a good tactic to mention that you have researched the company but would like more information on specific topics.  This shows that you are taking the interview seriously and are interested in the business and what it does.
